Hope, Gardening, and Baseball All Spring Eternal at Forbes.

In honor of the season, Friends of Forbes put together two gift baskets for our annual raffle at the library. One featured all things Red Sox, including two box seat tickets to the July 4th Red Sox –Orioles game at Fenway. Snacks for the game, some Red Sox games for the car ride and a scratch ticket to help defray the cost of parking were included.

The other basket was filled with the delights of gardening, everything you’d need to get started or augment your gardening plans this spring. These included gift certificates to The Hadley Gardening Center and Broadside Bookshop, a hand painted birdhouse, a host of gardening supplies, and 2 tickets to our very own Friends of Forbes 2010 Gardening Tour.

The drawing was held on April 20 2010 and the winners are The Red Sox basket: John Meehan of Northampton The Garden basket: Sara Hostetler of Northampton

What a fun way to give things away, celebrate the arrival of spring, and raise money for the best of places: our local public library.

Wine Tasting

"Wine is the most civilized thing in the world." -Ernest Hemingway.

On a beautiful September evening friends, supporters and fans of the library and good wine gathered for a night of wine tasting, music, food and friendly conversation. With expert wine stewards pouring samples and making recommendations, guests freely passed from station to station sampling wines from France, Italy Australia, Germany and South America as well as sake and local imported beers. As classical music from the 2nd floor balcony brightened the air, guests enjoyed the pleasure of seeing old friends, chatting with new people, sipping fine wine and enjoying finger food.

Hors d’oeuvres were served by teen volunteers, while Friends of Forbes members and library staff managed the room, setting tables, selling tickets and in the end leaving the reading room sparkling. Spirits were generously donated by Liquor 44 in Northampton. The event was a great success raising funds for Friends of Forbes sponsored activities at the library and, with a great variety of guests, both long time library supporters and first time attendees, a true community event. Join us at our next event. You won’t be disappointed!
