Starship Adventure at Your Library

The Children's Department is excited to announce the details of our 2009 Summer Reading Adventure. This year's program is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!

July 13 ~August 15th      Registration is ongoing      587-1010

Join us this summer as we travel to space and beyond!

This program is designed for kids ages 3-13, but younger and older readers will not be turned away! This is a non-competitive program that rewards kids for simply walking in the door and checking out their favorite books. All summer readers will be eligible to win fabulous prizes in our famous weekly raffle.

Starship Adventure at Your Library, the 2009 Massachusetts Summer Library Adventure, is funded by your local library, The Mass Regional Library Systems, and the Mass Board of Library Commissioners.

In addition to great books, amazing activities and hundreds of prizes join us every week for our

FREE SUPER TUESDAY FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT SERIES

sponsored by the Friends of Forbes Library and the Northampton Arts Council.

  July 14th 2-3pm Roger Tincknell and Davis Bates ~ Musicians/Storytellers

Davis Bates and Roger Tincknell have over four decades of combined performing experience, providing hundreds of performances in schools, libraries and other community settings. Their warm and participatory programs involve audiences in a wide variety of cultural heritages. Davis and Roger have both received Parents' Choice awards for their most recent recordings.

 

 July 14th 3:30-4:30pm Sasha Watson Young Adult Author BookTalk/Meet and Greet

Join Sasha to discuss her first book "Vidalia in Paris"
Watson does a wonderful job of describing Vidalia's emotions throughout the book...readers will enjoy this story, getting caught up in the romance and Parisian ambiance. --School Library Journal
Watson portrays Paris with a doting accuracy and delineates all the torments of first love. --Kirkus Reviews

 

 July 21st 2-3pm Forest Park Zoo on the Go ~ RETURNS!!!!!

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!!!! Two ½ hour sessions. REGISTRATION REQUIRED!!! Join us to meet some familiar animal friends and to meet some new ones!!!
A Zoo On the Go Program is an educational outreach program that brings live animals, artifacts, and other educational materials directly to us! This innovative program features a variety of animal ambassadors and artifacts. Zoo On The Go Presentations are designed to provide information about the animals, their special adaptations, habitats, behavior, diets, and status in the wild. Sessions provide an opportunity for kids to touch and observe the animals, as well as ask individual questions.

 July 21st 3:30-4:30 Improvisational Theater Workshop for ages 9-up

Teens who are enrolled in the MultiArts Theater program are inviting other teens and children age 9 and above to join them in a improvisational workshop Tuesday, July 21st from 3:30-4:30 in the Community Room. It is designed to exhibit how the arts can be used as a way to express ideas and dreams. Teens will participate in original plays that showcase issues that kids face in their daily lives, such as peer pressure, family conflicts, and cultural differences. The shows will be presented by this group of exceptional young actors under the direction of the MultiArts professional Theater and Art Director. Interaction with the audience will be encouraged!
Open to the public as well as the participants of The MultiArts Camp.

 July 28th 2-3pm Welcome to the TOE JAM PUPPET BAND !!!

DON'T MISS THIS GREAT SHOW!!! First time in Northampton!
The Toe Jam Puppet band will surely be a hit for kids (and adults) of all ages. Their shows are fully interactive, encouraging kids and parents to sing, dance, and participate in storytelling and finger plays. They also entertain with shadow puppetry and original songs. If you haven't brought your little (and big) ones to a Toe Jam show, it's time!!!

 August 4th 2-3pm Mad Scientist Rocket Show featuring Jeff Boyer

The Mad Scientist
Professor Von Schmartkopf has built the perfect rocket ship. All he needs now is a way to get it to the moon. And for that he needs to use physics. Physics is the study of how things move. Using spectacular, yet east-to-understand demonstrations, the takes kids on a fun-filled educational journey.
